In times of loss and emotional turmoil, many find solace in spirituality and prayer. Turning to prayer, meditative reflection, and spiritual contemplation can be a crucial aspect of navigating this challenging terrain.

Prayer serves as more than just a ritual during times of grief—it becomes a vital support system. It offers a connection to something beyond ourselves, providing strength and comfort when it's needed most. Whether seeking peace amidst chaos or clarity amidst confusion, prayer becomes a steady companion on the road to healing.

In this blog post, we offer a compilation of prayers and mantras designed to bring solace to those mourning a loss.

Mantras to Help With Grief

A mantra is a word or phrase repeated during the practice of meditation or to enhance mindfulness. While originally attributed to ancient Hinduism and Buddhism, many people use mantras and affirmations to ease their minds and help let go of unpleasant thoughts.

Below, find five mantras to use during meditation or any time your mind feels overwhelmed with grief

"In each breath, find peace."

This mantra encourages finding solace in the present moment, reminding you to seek moments of tranquility and calmness through deep breathing.

"One step at a time, one moment at a time."

This mantra emphasizes the importance of taking things slowly and focusing on the immediate task or moment, guiding you to navigate through your grief journey with patience and self-compassion.

“I feel this pain, but it will pass.”

A validation of the difficult emotions you’re feeling, while also a recognition that the overwhelming grief is temporary and you will be able to continue through your day.

"I honor my grief as a testament to love."

This is an encouragement to embrace grief as a natural response to love and loss, affirming that sadness reflects the depth of connection shared with the lost loved one.

"I am not alone. I am surrounded by love."

This combats feelings of isolation that can accompany grief. It serves as a reminder that you have loved ones who care for you.

Prayers for The Grieving

No matter your religion or cultural background, lifting yourself or someone else in prayer can be an important step in navigating grief. Below is a collection of prayers to bring strength to yourself or others.

Bless those who mourn, eternal God,
with the comfort of your love
that they may face each new day with hope
and the certainty that nothing can destroy
the good that has been given.

May their memories become joyful,
their days enriched with friendship,
and their lives encircled by your love.

Prayers of our Hearts by Vienna Cobb Anderson

This prayer asks for God's love to comfort those who are grieving, helping them face each new day with hope and reminding them that the good they've known can't be destroyed. It also asks for joyful memories, supportive friendships, and the constant presence of God's love in their lives.

At the rising sun and at its going down; We remember them.
At the blowing of the wind and in the chill of winter; We remember them.
At the opening of the buds and in the rebirth of spring; We remember them.
At the blueness of the skies and in the warmth of summer; We remember them.
At the rustling of the leaves and in the beauty of the autumn; We remember them.
At the beginning of the year and when it ends; We remember them.
As long as we live, they too will live, for they are now a part of us as We remember them.

When we are weary and in need of strength; We remember them.
When we are lost and sick at heart; We remember them.
When we have decisions that are difficult to make; We remember them.
When we have joy we crave to share; We remember them.
When we have achievements that are based on theirs; We remember them.
For as long as we live, they too will live, for they are now a part of us as, We remember them.

– “We Remember Them” by Sylvan Kamens & Rabbi Jack Riemer

This prayer provides a comforting reminder of the enduring presence of lost loved ones throughout time. It offers reassurance that as you remember and honor your departed, their memories and legacies continue to live on.

Be merciful to me, Lord, for I am in distress;
my eyes grow weak with sorrow,
my soul and body with grief.

– Psalms 31:9

This Bible passage offers comfort to the grieving by acknowledging the depths of their distress and sorrow, inviting them to seek solace in God's mercy and understanding during their time of mourning.

Father, Thank you that you are the “source of all comfort,” like it says in 1 Corinthians 1:3. I ask for your comfort to overwhelm me right now. I am not doing okay. My heart is sad, and I don’t know what to do about it, except for coming to you right now. Help me process what I am going through, and not just sweep my feelings under the rug. I’m not good at this, so I don’t know what to do next. Help me reach out to others if I need to. Help me trust that you will be with me every moment I am going through this. I am grateful that this will not last forever, and that one day you will make all things right. Help me fix my eyes on you, and cling to you during this time. Thank you, that you meet me right where I am. Amen.

This prayer acknowledges the need for support from a higher power to process grief and move through it. It can be difficult to ask for help while dealing with grief, and this straightforward prayer can guide you.

Lord, let us trust in your comfort,
Let us trust in your love.
As we grieve, we feel loss,
Though we know we are blessed.

 – Megan Sheehan, Marquette University

This excerpt from a longer prayer for mourning encourages trusting in God to help us deal with grief. It also acknowledges the good parts of life, even in moments of sadness.
